Quote of the Day

The capitalist and consumerist ethics are two sides of the same coin, a merger of two commandments. The supreme commandment of the rich is ‘Invest!’ The supreme commandment of the rest of us is ‘Buy!’ The capitalist–consumerist ethic is revolutionary in another respect. Most previous ethical systems presented people with a pretty tough deal. They were promised paradise, but only if they cultivated compassion and tolerance, overcame craving and anger, and restrained their selfish interests. This was too tough for most.

The history of ethics is a sad tale of wonderful ideals that nobody can live up to. Most Christians did not imitate Christ, most Buddhists failed to follow Buddha, and most Confucians would have caused Confucius a temper tantrum. In contrast, most people today successfully live up to the capitalist–consumerist ideal. The new ethic promises paradise on condition that the rich remain greedy and spend their time making more money and that the masses give free reign to their cravings and passions and buy more and more. This is the first religion in history whose followers actually do what they are asked to do. How though do we know that we’ll really get paradise in return? We’ve seen it on television.

Installing various OSes on the Fairphone 2 phone

The Fairphone 2 is a touchscreen-based, dual-SIM smartphone, designed to be easily repaired by the user. It was the first modular smartphone available for purchase. It was first released in December 2015, and production ceased in 2018, and has since received both hardware improvements and major software updates. Wikipedia

Introduction

The operating system possibilities are quite a few, basically you have to decide between a privacy-oriented OS or one with Google Mobile Services. Your options so far:

  1. Ubuntu Touch - also known as Ubuntu Phone, is a mobile version of the Ubuntu operating system that was originally developed by Canonical Ltd. and is now being developed by the UBports community.
  2. Lineage OS - a free and open-source operating system for set-top boxes, smartphones and tablet computers, based on the Android mobile platform. It is the successor to the custom ROM CyanogenMod , from which it was forked in December 2016 when Cyanogen Inc. announced it was discontinuing development and shut down the infrastructure behind the project.
  3. Fairphone OS - the default Android installation for Fairphone 2, which includes Google Mobile Services (GMS).
  4. Fairphone Open - an alternative, open source version of Fairphone OS, built by Fairphone, that puts transparency and ownership in the spotlight. It comes stripped from proprietary applications (like the Google Mobile Services) and can be modified by people who feel like doing so.
  5. Sailfish OS - is a general purpose Linux distribution used commonly as a mobile operating system combining the Linux kernel for a particular hardware platform, the open-source Mer core stack of middleware, a proprietary UI contributed by Jolla or an open source UI, and other third-party components.

To simplify, if you want privacy you should go for Fairphone Open or Lineage OS. If you use Ubuntu extensively, Ubuntu Touch is really nice. If you need Google Services (Play Store, etc), you should use stock Fairphone OS. I’ve noticed some bugs in Sailfish OS on FP2 but it’s still in beta so there’s that. Take my opinions with a grain of salt.

Let’s begin.

Microsoft Edge Canary on macOS

Microsoft launched the new Microsoft Edge browser for macOS (for now just a Chromium re-skin with some telemetry sprinkled in) so if you want to run it on your Mac you must either use the built-in installer (and get all the benefits of seeing telemetry data being sent to the cloud) or extract the package and copy the .app to /Applications.

Download the latest version from the Microsoft Edge Insider website.

$ pkgutil --expand-full MicrosoftEdgeCanary-76.0.167.0.pkg ~/Downloads/MicrosoftEdgeCanary/

If you have a different version, adjust the command line accordingly.

OpenPGP Web Key Directory (WKD) hosting

An OpenPGP Web Key Directory is a method for users to discover the public key of a new contact. The user requests the public key from the contacts an organisation maintains.

Compared to previous key discovery schemes that relied on DNS, WKD can be easily deployed on any HTTPS server because WKD is a lookup scheme that relies on HTTPS and correctly placed files on your web server and no other software is required to run on the web server.

You can use automatic key discovery with WKD to make it easy for users to import your key in GPG since version 2.1.12. There are plenty of email clients that already implemented it, Thunderbird/Enigmail, Outlook with GpgOL, Kmail, and more .
